Department of Mechanical Engineering

history

Since 1938, combined Mechanical and Electrical Engineering degree course was introduced. After the war, in 1946, the Department was upgraded to become the Faculty Engineering of University of Yangon.
The aim of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to train both undergraduate and postgraduate students to become both intellectual and practical experienced engineers who will contribute to the development of country and its region. Principles and practice of mechanical engineering are presented by conducting relevant research and development with the best possible education.

research

Nowadays, the role of Mechanical Engineers is expending to all areas of energy production and transfer while the demand for energy is constantly increasing. Thus, the main area of research study in this department is of course “renewable energy technology”.

      Renewable Energy

        1.    Study on the Performance of the Engine Using Bio-diesel

 Mechanical  Turbocharged Intercooler Diesel Engine

Growth in the world’s population has resulted in a surge of energy demand. Conventional petroleum-based diesel fuel is not renewable and generates a significant amount of pollutants. Bio-diesel is a promising source of energy. It is a renewable and biodegradable fuel with less harmful emissions than petroleum based diesel fuel. The objectives of this research work are:  to study physical and chemical properties of bio-diesel from Jatropha oil, bio-diesel blends and diesel fuel, and to investigate the difference in engine performance between conventional diesel and bio-diesel blend (B5).

           2.   Decorticating Machine for Jatropha Curcas

Jatropha oil is an environmentally safe, cost-effect and renewable source of non-conventional energy as a promising substitute to diesel, kerosene, LPG, coal and firewood etc. The objective of this project is to support Jatropha oil production. There are two parts in the machine: husking and cleaning. One hundred kilogram of dried Jatropha can be cleaned in an hour. A motor of 1 h.p, 50 Hz is needed for power source. The specifications are as follow. (a) Length = 78 cm, (b) width = 43 cm, (c) Height = 75 cm, (d) Drum size = 15.5 cm,  (e) Drum width = 4.5 cm, shaft size = 2.5 cm and Fan speed = 1800 rpm.

            3.    Solar Turbine

Solar Collector

 Absorber plate

Solar energy is one of the sustainable energy. There are two ways to use the solar energy. One is converted to electricity by using photo voltaic cell. Another is to collect the heat energy and is converted to rotational energy, which can produce electricity. The objectives of this project are to get the efficient conversion of solar energy into electricity, to reduce the initial investment cost, to operate and maintain easily, to enhance the life time of system. The flow of air is heated and expanded in turbine. It can convert solar energy into rotational energy. And then, rotational energy is converted into electricity.

               4.   Overshoot Water Wheel

 Water Wheel

 Water Wheel

There are various natural resources such as water, wind and solar in Myanmar. Among them, water resource is the most abundant as there are many rivers and streams with rich electrical energy. Moreover, the cost of hydro-electric power is relatively cheaper compared with other resources. The purpose of this research is to generate power from water in hilly region. The efficiency of water wheel is not much as other turbine but it can build easily in rural area with wood. It needs low initial cost and easy to maintain.

                5.   Water Turbine

The water turbine has three helix blades and its diameter is 3 feet and 31/2 feet long. It can be constructed with local purchased materials and can be installed easily. It can test in the flowing river water. Its power is expected to pump one kilowatt of energy. It can drive generator to power the villages along the shore of rivers and can also drive 6 inches centrifugal pump to supply water for their own agricultural firm.

             6.   Others projects

(6.1)   Centrifugal Fan used in small-scale Industry

Centrifugal fans are widely used in various industries. Most of them are imported and so to design, construct them in locally and to get the performance curves are important. Centrifugal fan has two main parts, impeller and casing. Forward and backward curved impellers were designed by using circular arc method. The number of impeller blade was eight and the designed speed was 1500rpm. The designed centrifugal fan was tested at various speeds such as 750, 1000, 1500 and 1800rpm.  In this research project, the design and performance test for centrifugal fan have been carried out. From the experiments, it was found that the nature of tested performance curved were nearly the same as theoretical curved for both impellers.

          (6.2)   Pressure Regulator Unit

Nowadays, the fossil fuel oil expends much foreign currency. To lower the fuel oil usage in transportation, most of vehicles are changed to be natural gas vehicles. Pressure regulator is a component used to reduce the pressure of compressed natural gas to mix with intake air into the natural gas engine. Objective of this unit is to reduce the gas pressure from (2700 – 3200) psi to 11.5 psi with two stage pressure reduction and to regulate the gas amount for required engine load for 6000 cc CNG Engine. Reinforced diaphragms and springs, lever arms are used to actuate the needle pins for changing valve opening areas. It has been tested with Bio-gas Engine, 3700 watt load.
