The Department of English is one of the supporting departments in YTU. English is taught as a compulsory subject from A.G.T.I. first year level to PhD. Since 1997, with the development of government technological colleges and universities under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the English department is fully responsible for the production of highly qualified English teachers and academic teachers with excellent command of English for those colleges and universities. English Language Resource Centre The English Language Resource Centre has come into existence since 1998. This self-access centre is open to postgraduate students such as PhD Courses and Master Courses in Engineering and in Applied Science along with the candidates of the Diploma and Master Courses in English for Specific Purposes. They can make use of the resource centre facilities. Sources available include encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference books, course books, pamphlets, and periodicals relating to science and technology, and books on developing skills and on language teaching methodology with a view to helping the users for their reference and research. The centre is also useful for those who are taking international examinations such as IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE, etc. A useful amenity for learners of English is the listening facility. They can use audio/visual aids such as cassette and video player. At the listening station, four students can do listening at the same time without making any disturbance to each other. By means of audio-visual aids, they can get enough exposure to imitate the stress, intonation and pronunciation, and to get native-like fluency and accent. An excellent video collection including educational and recreational videos is available to users. Facilities are provided so that twenty six users can use the room at a time.

Modifications to the prescribed texts are made from time to time to keep up with all the changes in information technology and to fulfil their immediate academic needs as well as their future occupational needs. Effective lectures are arranged to be given using CD-Rom databases. Undergraduate Courses English is also taught as a compulsory subject in the Master and PhD Courses in Engineering and Architecture, with the aim of producing postgraduates with an excellent command of language and with substantial experience and exposure in language, and thus being able to deliver lecture in English.
