The Department of Chemical Engineering was founded in 1963. Before 1997, undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering, postgraduate diploma course in Food Technology and master course in Chemical Engineering were offered in Department of Chemical Engineering at Yangon Technological University (Former names are Rangoon Institute of Technology and Yangon Institute of Technology). Since 2002, with the development of Government Technical Colleges and Universities (GTCs & GTUs) all over Myanmar, undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering was offered in Yangon West Technological University (Hlaing Tharyar Campus), Thanlyin GTC and Mandalay GTC. The role of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics is its guide in practice. The goal of Chemical Engineering Department is to give a clear concept of the important principles and general methods concerning with the chemical engineering field and other related fields.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES The course extends over five years. The first two years are regarded as technologies in plastic & rubber engineering , food & chemical engineering, steady state material and energy balances, basic education in engineering mathematics, engineering science, engineering mechanics, applied electrical engineering, engineering drawing, machine drawing and designs, elements of material science for the Certificate of AGTI in plastic & rubber engineering, and food & chemical engineering, bringing the student to the stage at which he will be able to contribute usefully to the work in Government office and Factories. The second two years are regarded as unsteady state material and energy balances, unit operations involving fluid flow, heat transfer & mass transfer, thermodynamics, particle mechanics, quality control, computer applications in process industry, chemical process design, introduction to chemical reaction engineering, instrumentation for chemical process control, inorganic chemical technology, pollution control, maintenance and industrial safety for Bachelor Degree of Technology (B.Tech.) in Chemical Engineering. In the last one year course, instrumentation and automatic process control, chemical kinetics and reactor design, organic chemical technology, plant design and economics for chemical engineers, treatment processes for pollution control, biochemical engineering, food technology and pulp and paper technology as elective course are taught. Finally, the students are required to select his or her thesis topics in the areas of plastic technology, rubber technology, fats and oils, separation technology, dyes and pigments technology and renewable energy technology to be submitted as a partial fulfillment in the requirements for the Bachelor Degree of Chemical Engineering. As for Yangon technological University, Chemical Engineering Department has produced over (1403) promising chemical engineers up to year 2008.
POSTGRADUATE COURSES As postgraduate courses, postgraduate diploma program in Food Technology, master program in Food Technology, master program in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D program in Chemical Engineering were offered in Department of Chemical Engineering at Yangon Technological University. More postgraduates in diploma and master courses of Food Technology as well as Biotechnology, master and Ph.D courses ( Chemical Engineering ) have been produced under the new system are offered for the in-service students. Total number of postgraduates were ( 242 ) in postgraduate diploma program for Food Technology, ( 9 ) in master program for Food Technology, ( 100 ) in postgraduate diploma program for Biotechnology, ( 6 ) in master program for Biotechnology , ( 80 ) in master program for Chemical Engineering , and ( 5 ) in Ph.D program for Chemical Engineering.
